Vic:Alfred Hospital echo coroner's findings over Furlonger death

Melbourne's Alfred Hospital says it has an improved system in place to prevent peoplefitted with pacemakers undergoing MRI scans, following the death of an elderly patient.

Coroner GRAEME JOHNSTONE said yesterday that the death of 82-year-old ROY FURLONGER,who suffered a heart attack in the tunnel of a magnetic resonance imaging machine at TheAlfred Hospital, was avoidable.

The Alfred's chief executive officer MICHAEL WALSH says the hospital agrees with thecoroner's findings.

He's told ABC radio there are now much tighter procedures -- including the use of ametal detector -- to prevent patients with a pacemaker from entering the MRI machine.

Coroner JOHNSTONE has recommended a standardised set of MRI checks and balances acrossAustralia and that the procedures be regularly audited.
